OpenArm Open-Source Robotic Arm | High-Torque Motors, CANFD & MIT Protocol for Precision and Efficiency

  1. Why OpenArm Became a Hit
OpenArm, an open-source robotic arm project, has recently gained rapid popularity in the robotics community. Its success stems from precise positioning and excellent design. Targeting educational, research, and small-scale automation scenarios, OpenArm offers a complete open-source ecosystem—including mechanical structures, control electronics, and software algorithms—significantly lowering the barrier for robotic development.

At the same time, there is a growing trend toward democratizing robotics technology. More developers, startups, and even high school students are eager to engage with practical robotic systems, and OpenArm meets this need. Its modular design and comprehensive documentation make it accessible even to enthusiasts without a professional background, enabling them to get started quickly and confidently.

Why OpenArm Uses High-Performance Joint Motors

Superior Torque Characteristics

OpenArm leverages high-torque-density motors to ensure precise and stable operation under heavy loads. The robotic arm utilizes a combination of different motors for its joints, from the shoulder to the end-effector, to optimize load capacity. For parts under single-sided support, motors equipped with cross-roller bearings are used to maintain high stiffness and accuracy.

Although not all selected motors are ultra-high-end QDD types, their choice balances high load capacity with a compact and streamlined form factor. The precision of the end-effector directly relies on the smooth torque output of the joint motors. High-performance magnets and optimized electromagnetic design ensure consistent torque across the full speed range, minimizing torque ripple and enabling the OpenArm to perform precise operations reliably.

High-Speed CANFD and MIT Protocol Bus Support

For a single motor operating at typical 1 kHz control frequency, both CAN and CANFD work efficiently. However, in a full robotic arm architecture, system-level challenges differ significantly. Traditional CAN 2.0 (1 Mbps) can control up to three motors at 1 kHz, while a single CANFD bus (1M+5M configuration) can control 6–8 motors at the same frequency.

A 7-DOF robotic arm requires at least 7 joint motors. Using two CAN buses increases wiring complexity and control difficulty, whereas a single CANFD bus can support the entire arm, greatly simplifying the system architecture.

Advantages of the MIT Protocol

The MIT protocol offers several key advantages over traditional CANopen:

Efficiency: Optimized specifically for modern robotic applications, MIT removes unnecessary overhead from general-purpose CANopen, providing a more practical solution for non-industrial robotic applications.

Ease of Integration: Unlike CANopen, which requires protocol stack support on both motor firmware and Linux-based controllers, MIT is simple and direct, reducing development workload and execution overhead.

Native CANFD Compatibility: MIT is free from legacy constraints, making it easier to leverage CANFD’s high speed and extended frame advantages. From upgrading to CANFD 1M+5M, to using 64-byte data frames for extended protocol fields, or implementing multi-motor broadcast protocols, MIT is highly flexible.

Competitive Cost Advantage

High-performance motors using MIT protocol can maintain competitive pricing, often 30–50% lower than equivalent imported motors. This cost efficiency is crucial for open-source projects, educational institutions, and startups, allowing broader deployment of robotic platforms and lowering R&D thresholds.

Why Joint Motor Manufacturers Need CANFD-Based MIT Control

Irreversible Technology Trend

CANFD is becoming the standard for robotic joint communication. Its higher bandwidth (5–8 Mbps compared to 1 Mbps) and larger data frames (64 bytes vs. 8 bytes) meet the modern demands of multi-joint synchronized control and richer status feedback.

Strategic Significance of Protocol Choice

Motor manufacturers face a key decision: continue with traditional CANopen or adopt the more specialized MIT protocol. While CANopen is standardized and widely used in industrial environments, its complex protocol stack and upgrade limitations are challenges. MIT, by contrast, is lightweight, robot-focused, and highly adaptable for CANFD applications.

Although CANopen remains reliable and offers mature ecosystems with decades of industrial validation, future strategies are likely to support dual-protocol approaches to address different market needs.

Overcoming CANFD Protocol Upgrade Challenges

Core Tools: Reliable CANFD Motor Debugging

Successful CANFD protocol development relies on effective debugging tools. While professional CANFD communication tools exist in the automotive sector, their high cost often motivates motor manufacturers to develop in-house USB-CANFD solutions.

However, self-developed tools have inherent limitations:

They often cover only basic motor debugging functions, lacking advanced analysis depth and protocol compatibility.

Resource fragmentation leads to incomplete software ecosystems and limited long-term technical support.

Specialized CANFD solutions for robotics now exist in the market, supporting multiple channels and providing stable, cost-effective interfaces for both motor and robotic system developers.

Technical Background: Professional CANFD Support Teams

Upgrading from traditional CAN to CANFD involves multiple technical challenges: physical layer adjustments, communication timing optimization, and error-handling mechanisms. Establishing internal expert teams or collaborating with specialized providers is crucial for successful protocol upgrades. Experienced technical teams leverage expertise accumulated in automotive and industrial communications to help robotics manufacturers rapidly build stable, reliable transmission networks supporting CAN/FD and other real-time protocols.
